The Bounty of Beauty in SPHERE

Every time I have the honor of attending an event with SPHERE members I leave awestruck. Perhaps it’s because of the love that is so evident and unconditionally shared between members, or the energy and enthusiasm of the volunteers. Every person present has truly found their happy place.

“I love these guys and there is so much fellowship on Thursday nights,” says Kim Pereira, longtime Ridgefielder, and the director of SPHERE’s Music and Performing Arts Program.

In addition to more than 30 SPHERE members who attended last night’s musical program, special guests included Joe Russo, a longtime bass player with Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra (RSO), and Ridgebury School 5th grade Girl Scouts and their troop leaders. “The girls have chosen to work with SPHERE for 14 weeks to get their Bronze Award,” explains Troop Leader Rachel Bender. “They absolutely love coming here,” she adds.

SPHERE builds community. Every night of the week is a “SPHERICAL”. There’s game night, open gym, swimming, jewelry making, and cooking classes at Ridgefield Academy. The possibilities are endless and the future is bright for SPHERE.

The impact SPHERE has had on lives has stretched far beyond the boundaries of those who comprise the group. In fact, it has stretched far beyond the boundaries of the town of Ridgefield. For a quarter century, not only those with disabilities, but all people, both young and old, have benefited because they come in contact with SPHERE. Watching the members perform on stage, listening to them sing at community events, rubbing shoulders with them at local shops and restaurants where they proudly work- SPHERE has changed the way people think about those with disabilities.

Twenty eight years ago, a group of parents joined forces so they could provide a better life for their children- a life rich with opportunities that fostered emotional and intellectual growth coupled with fun, enriching experiences. They called the organization they formed SPHERE: Special-People Housing-Education-Recreation-Employment.

We are truly blessed that SPHERE remains vibrant and true to its mission.
